The 10x Memorization Gap: What Fast Memorizers Do Differently

Research found some musicians memorize a piece in 8 minutes while others need 100 minutes — for the same material. Here is what the fastest memorizers do differently, and how to apply it to your own repertoire.

You have two gigs this weekend. Between them, you need to get six new songs performance-ready. You sit down with the setlist and start running through the first tune, hoping repetition will do the work.

Some musicians would have that song locked in under ten minutes. Others would still be fighting it an hour later. This is not about talent, experience, or how many years you have been playing. It is about which memorization strategy you reach for first, and most of us reach for the wrong one.

The 10x Difference Is Real

In a study of 60 university-level instrumentalists, researcher Jennifer Mishra asked each musician to memorize a short 36-measure exercise, taking however much time they needed.1 Everyone eventually played the piece from memory successfully. But how long they took was wildly different.

The four fastest memorizers needed between 8 minutes and 17 minutes. The four slowest needed between 67 minutes and 100 minutes. Same piece. Same instructions. A 10x gap.

Earlier work with pianists memorizing the Bach D minor Prelude and Fugue found a similar spread: some musicians had the piece memorized in under 10 hours, while others needed nearly 20.2 The average was around 14 hours, but that average hides two very different experiences.

These findings point to something encouraging: memorization speed is not fixed. It is strongly influenced by the strategy you use. The musicians who memorized fastest were not necessarily the most technically skilled, but they approached the task differently from the first minute.

Four Strategies, Two Winners

Mishra identified four basic memorization strategies that musicians use:1

Holistic. Start at the beginning and play straight through to the end. If you make a mistake, back up only slightly and keep going. You are building an overall map of the piece first, then filling in details on subsequent passes.

Additive. Start at the beginning and memorize a short initial segment. Once that segment is solid, add a little more material to it, growing the memorized chunk until it eventually contains the whole piece. Each pass extends the territory while reinforcing what came before.

Segmented. Break the piece into small, independent sections and memorize each one separately. Section A is memorized on its own. Section B is memorized on its own. Then C, then D. The sections may not be connected until late in the process.

Serial. Similar to segmented, but you connect sections as you go. Memorize A, then memorize B and connect it to A, then memorize C and connect it to the A-B chain. The piece is built link by link from beginning to end.

The finding was clear: the fastest memorizers relied heavily on Holistic and Additive strategies. The slowest memorizers leaned on Segmented and Serial.

Why Holistic and Additive Win

The Holistic and Additive approaches share something critical: context.

When you run a piece straight through from the beginning (Holistic), you are constantly processing how each section relates to what came before it and what follows. The bridge makes sense because you just heard the second chorus end. The key change registers because you felt the harmonic ground you are leaving.

When you use the Additive approach, each new segment is immediately connected to material you already know. You are not memorizing isolated chunks and hoping they snap together later. You are building outward from a solid core.

Segmented and Serial strategies, by contrast, treat sections as independent units. A musician using the Segmented approach might have a perfectly memorized verse and a perfectly memorized chorus, but no practice at the transition between them. On stage, that gap becomes a stumbling point exactly when the pressure is highest.

The Serial approach is better than Segmented because it at least connects the pieces. But it still builds the song in one long chain. If that chain breaks at any point, a missed cue, a distraction in the room, a moment of doubt, you may have no way back in. There is only one path through the song, and it starts at the beginning.

What This Means for Gigging Musicians

Most working musicians default to some version of the Segmented or Serial approach without realizing it. You pull up a chart, work the verse until it feels comfortable, then move to the chorus, then the bridge. Each section gets attention in isolation. You may not run the full song from memory until the night before the gig.

That is the Segmented strategy. And the research says it is the slowest route to reliable recall.

The Holistic and Additive approaches do not require more total practice time. They require a different sequence of practice. Instead of isolating sections, you expose yourself to the full song earlier and more often. You build context alongside content. The first few passes may feel messier than drilling one section at a time, but the memory that results is more durable and more recoverable under pressure.

Applying This to Songs With Lyrics and Changes

The Mishra study used instrumentalists reading notation. But the principle translates directly to the kind of material gigging musicians work with.

If you are learning a new cover for Saturday night, try this:

  1. Run the full song once, chart in front of you, just to hear how it hangs together.
  2. On the second pass, hide the chart for the parts you can attempt and peek only when you stall. This is the Holistic approach. You are building the overall map.
  3. Identify the first section you can reliably recall. Maybe it is just the chorus or the first four lines. Lock that segment. Then add the next section to it without dropping the first. This is Additive.
  4. By the third or fourth pass, you should be attempting more of the song from memory than you are reading.

What not to do: Isolate the bridge and drill it until it is perfect, then isolate verse two and drill it, then hope they connect on stage. That is a Segmented approach, and it is training fragility into the memory.

How Repriso Encourages the Faster Strategies

The skeleton of the song is visible, first letters of each line, section markers, and you have to produce the full content from that minimal cue. You are practicing retrieval of the complete song, not isolated sections.

And because Repriso tracks which lines you stumble on, it does not let you hide in the sections you already know. The practice queue surfaces the weak spots without letting you lose the context that holds the song together. You are always working on the parts that need attention inside the full-song framework.

The Bottom Line

The gap between memorizing a song in 10 minutes and 100 minutes is not a gap in talent. It is a gap in strategy. The fastest memorizers expose themselves to the whole song early and build outward from a solid core. The slowest memorizers isolate sections and hope they connect under pressure.

If you are a working musician carrying dozens of songs between gigs, you cannot afford to be on the slow end of that curve. Shift your practice toward Holistic and Additive approaches, and use a tool that enforces those strategies rather than letting you drift back into drilling isolated sections.
